We all like to read books that we connect with, and our students appreciate the connections they have with characters as well. It is vital that we make these books readily available for our students within the classroom. It should not be difficult for our students to find books they connect with.
In addition to this, our students should be exposed to characters that are not like them as well. Many students do not have the opportunity to travel and see the world, but literature is the next best resource to making connections with those who have different backgrounds than their own.
The following is a list of books that I LOVE that fulfill the need to have more inclusive books in our classroom. The links included are Amazon affiliate links which means that if you click through and purchase one they give me a few cents, but it does not change the price of the book for you. These affiliate commissions help me to keep the blog up and running.
Books with characters from different ethnicities:
Books with characters with different abilities:
Drop the Puck (This one is a series.)
Books with characters with nontraditional families:
Books with characters that deal with death:
This is by no means an exhaustive list of inclusive books, and I would argue that the more the merrier when it comes to books, always. These just happen to be some of my favorites.
